specialist care for complex and recurrent infections
We offer outpatient consultation for adults across a wide range of infectious diseases, including infections of prostheses, post-operative infections, chronic viral diseases and infections in the immunocompromised. Infectious disease medicine is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on diagnosing and managing infections.
Some viral infections are long-term conditions that need specialist assessment and ongoing management. We provide outpatient care for patients living with chronic viral diseases.
Chronic Viral Diseases
Infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, and each behaves differently and responds to different treatment. Diagnosing and managing them requires a detailed understanding of the organisms involved, the antimicrobial medicines used to treat them, the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance, and the individual characteristics of each patient.
We see patients with infections of prostheses, post-operative infections, infections in the immunocompromised host and recurrent infections, where careful assessment can help identify the cause and guide the most effective, targeted treatment.
Complex & Recurrent Infections
Infectious disease is a broad specialty that crosses multiple organ systems, so we work closely with GPs and with medical and surgical specialists to make sure patients receive well-coordinated care.
Working With Your Care Team
Travel can expose people to infections that are uncommon in New Zealand. We assess patients who have become unwell after returning from overseas, as well as those with suspected tropical infections, to identify the cause and arrange appropriate treatment.
