before surgery
preparing you for surgery and supporting your recovery
We provide specialist physician reviews for adults having surgery, helping to identify and manage medical risks so that patients are as well prepared as possible for their procedure and recovery.
Some patients need medical support after their operation, for example if a health condition becomes harder to manage, or if unexpected medical problems arise during recovery. We provide review and ongoing management to help patients recover well and return to their usual activities.
After Surgery
Surgery places extra demands on the body, and existing medical conditions can affect how well a person copes with an operation and how smoothly they recover. A perioperative medical review is a specialist physician assessment that looks at the whole patient, not just the procedure, to help make surgery as safe as possible.
What Is a Perioperative Medical Review?
Perioperative medicine is a collaborative field. We work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists and GPs, and can also advise on longer-term follow-up once you have recovered from surgery.
Working With Your Surgical Team
A pre-operative review is particularly helpful for patients who have several medical conditions, are older, or are having a larger operation. We review your overall health and how well your existing conditions are controlled, including heart, lung, kidney and diabetes-related conditions, and can arrange further tests if needed.
We also review your medications, including advising on which to continue or pause around the time of surgery, and provide recommendations to help lower the risk of complications. Where it's helpful, this information is shared with your surgeon, anaesthetist and GP so everyone involved in your care is working from the same plan.
